Potato salad, watermelon, barbecued chicken … and baked beans, of course! It wouldn’t be summer without ‘em, and I think that’s why the food holiday gods must have picked July to be National Baked Bean Month. icon smile Celebrate Summer with Easy Recipes for Baked Beans

It also makes for perfect timing with the 4th of July – which is centered around backyard barbecues and all of those famous summer party foods.

Now, one thing I love about baked beans is that you can very easily doctor-up store-bought or canned baked beans for a shortcut homemade side dish everyone will love. A little of this, a little of that – and you can make ‘em your own!

10 Must-Have Burgers for Memorial Day

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

Sarah Schiear1 signature 10 Must Have Burgers for Memorial DayBLT Burger RE 10 Must Have Burgers for Memorial DayDid you know that the month of May is National Burger Month? I happen to think that this works out perfectly, considering that Memorial Day falls in the month of May – which also just happens to kick off grilling season!

We all have our favorite classic beef burger recipes – sometimes it’s not even a recipe, but a way you prepare them … that you could probably do with your eyes closed!

I know for me, it’s all about making sure to use plenty of salt and not to overwork the meat. I can stick with plain old ground beef and go that route, and I’ll get deliciously juicy and flavorful burgers every time. (We’ve included these tricks and lots more in this handy collection of burger cooking tips!)

Of course, I do always like to add cheese – that’s a given, right? (You guys surely remember how much I love cheese!) Anything from American to Cheddar to Brie floats my burger boat. But sometimes, I like to get even more creative …

Jessica TN Summertime Showdown: Battle of the Fruit DessertsTraditional Strawberry Shortcake RE Summertime Showdown: Battle of the Fruit DessertsSummertime means lazy Sunday afternoons, sitting outside with a good book and a light breeze, and, of course, fruity desserts. While heavier fare may be fitting for those cold winter months, summer calls for something light and refreshing. What better way to celebrate than with your favorite fruit!

I’m sure you, like me, have your own personal favorites when it comes to fruit desserts. I, for one, can never turn down desserts with strawberries, especially if whipped cream is involved. The same can be said for peaches and bananas. However, my love for fruit knows no bounds, and if faced with a table full of different fruity desserts, I would probably grab a bit of every last one.

One of the great parts about summer: with so many graduation parties, wedding showers, reunions, and other gatherings, you get the opportunity to bake all kinds of fruit desserts, even pitting them against one another for the ultimate summertime showdown — at least as far as desserts go. Which fruit do you think would be the biggest crowd-pleaser among your friends and family?

We’ve got some wonderful fruity dessert ideas to help get you started!

5 Light ‘n’ Easy Dip Recipes for Summer

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Sarah Schiear1 signature 5 Light n Easy Dip Recipes for SummerBaked Spinach and Artichoke Dip RE 5 Light n Easy Dip Recipes for SummerAs the weather heats up, many of us have one thing on the brain: swimsuit season! Whether you have a summer vacation planned, or you’re just making the transition from sweaters to tank tops, chances are you wouldn’t mind adding a few lighter recipes into your current rotation.

I know I wouldn’t!

And with Memorial Day, 4th of July, and countless summer parties around the corner, the world of appetizers and munchies is probably a good place to start.

Classic dip recipes are a summer favorite – I mean, when was the last time you went to a BBQ or other summer gathering and you didn’t see one of those seven-layer Mexican dips with the beans, sour cream, and cheese … or a creamy onion dip sitting next to a bowl of potato chips? Perhaps the better question is: When was the last time you were able to resist ‘em?

Well, the Mr. Food Test Kitchen is here to save the day!

Cool Summer Suppers

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Refrigerator Layered Salad RE Cool Summer SuppersHere we are in the dog days of summer and I don’t know about anyone else, but I just hate the thought of turning on the oven. Yet I still need to put dinner on the table, so I’m doing a lot of main plate salads. Not only is it a “cool” way to prepare dinner, but it gives me an opportunity to use up what’s lurking in the vegetable bin, as well as in the fridge or pantry.

For example, last night I made a big salad of the “basics” – romaine, cukes, and tomatoes, and threw in some chick peas (I always keep a few cans of this good protein on hand). I had leftover potatoes from a few nights before, so they got cut up and thrown into the bowl. Some boiled eggs and some cut-up leftover deli turkey and voila! – we had a delicious chef’s salad for dinner! A few sunflower seeds sprinkled on top and my family sat down to a healthy, delicious meal.
