Reader Recipe: Texas Country-Fried Greens

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Sarah Schiear1 signature Reader Recipe: Texas Country Fried GreensTexas Country Fried Greens OR 300x225 Reader Recipe: Texas Country Fried GreensThis recipe for Texas Country-Fried Greens was submitted to us by reader Michael S., a born-and-raised Texan who says this recipe is as good as Grandma used to make.

We took it upon ourselves to whip it up in the Mr. Food Test Kitchen, and we say it’s a keeper! It’s nice and simple, just how we like it. And although we don’t have any Texan grandmothers to judge, we think this is about as tasty as greens get. I mean, there’s bacon! How can this be bad?

The cast-iron skillet works well here, so use it if you’ve got one.

Make it a meal with our Country Barbecued Ribs, Classic Mashed Potatoes, and Texas Sheet Cake for dessert.

How to Host an Award-Winning Oscar Party: 2012 Edition

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Sarah Schiear1 signature How to Host an Award Winning Oscar Party: 2012 Editionoscars 203x300 How to Host an Award Winning Oscar Party: 2012 EditionI don’t know about you, but whenever the Oscars come around each year, I get excited. And usually, I haven’t even seen most of the movies!

This year is no exception. I haven’t seen one movie up for Best Picture – not one! I’m thinking about either renting The Help or going to see The Artist at an old-fashioned theater (which I think will go just perfectly with an almost totally silent, old-fashioned film) this week so that I can at least be somewhat informed. Well, that and, I really want to see those movies!

What I love about the Academy Awards is that even if you haven’t seen all of the movies, it’s still fun to get a group together and watch all of the celebrities and the show itself.

One of the ways I like to do this is by making a few dishes inspired by the plots of the movies up for awards. It’s easy enough to look up what each movie is about, and then pick a few recipes that match the theme. That way, you also aren’t totally clueless when you’re watching!

So, I’ve gone ahead and selected a few of the nominated movies for Best Picture, and created a menu for each. Pick a dish from each, or make ‘em all if you want to celebrate your favorite movie.

Kelly Rusin1 signature Sneak Peek into Our Comfort Cookbook: Southern Peach CobblerSouthern Peach Cobbler RE Sneak Peek into Our Comfort Cookbook: Southern Peach CobblerHappy 2012 everyone! I hope everyone had a great holiday and is ready for new and exciting adventures this year!

This past Christmas I decided to give the new Mr. Food Test Kitchen Comfort Cookbook out as gifts to some of my family and friends. Some had to be mailed but others were accompanied by one of the yummy dishes in the book, made by yours truly, which turned out to be a great idea!

Shortly after New Year’s I received an email from my cousin Janeen who said her 12 yr. old spunky little red-headed daughter Bekah wanted to make a recipe from the new book.
