Welcome to Eataly, NYC

Eataly 225x300 Welcome to Eataly, NYCOne of the things I love about working at Mr. Food is that I’m constantly surrounded by – you guessed it – food! I love to eat as much as I love to cook, and when I travel it’s no surprise that I’m always about the food.

When I’m planning a trip, one of the first things I’m looking at is where I’d like to eat. I love to research other cities and learn about their secret places. My favorites are usually the small “Mom & Pop” shops that only locals know about, but my recent trip to New York City offered an exception to that rule.

What was the exception? Eataly! It’s certainly no “Mom & Pop” shop – it’s actually quite the opposite. It is a huge (40,000 square feet!) Italian market and food emporium. It’s kind of like a big artisanal supermarket, with lots of restaurants. Some are sit-down restaurants, though my favorite part was the big open area in the center of the place where you could walk around to several different themed areas: meat and cheese (this one was my favorite!), seafood, and a vegetarian-friendly section. Although you can sit at a bar for any of these, most of it involves standing at communal tables — which makes the whole experience pretty unique.

Art The Pillsbury Dough Boy 200x300 IDDBA Dairy Deli Bake Conference Highlights Food Trends

Having a few laughs with the Pillsbury Dough Boy himself!

I recently attended a conference in Houston, Texas, for food industry members of the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association (IDDBA) to check out the latest trends in our dairies, delis and bakeries.

Like my new hat from my visit to Houston?

The IDDBA’s national conference, the Dairy-Deli-Bake, is where representatives from our local supermarkets, delis and specialty shops meet with food manufacturers to brainstorm about what consumers would most like to find in our markets.

Cheese selections at IDDBA Conference

At the conference, there are rows and rows of every kind of food and related product for people in the industry to try! If you’re a cheese-lover (like me), there’s every cheese you could want, all available for tasting: soft, hard, blends, imported and domestic.

From talking to the experts, I can tell you that we’ll be seeing even more international cheese available at our markets in smaller sizes, which are quite a value. At our deli counters, we’ll be seeing more homestyle tastes in our meats, as well as in our salads, all to make our lives easier while delivering comfort. And, in the coming year, we’ll be finding more unique artisan and par-baked breads in our markets.

Of course, after seeing and sampling so many new varieties of deli meats and cheese and dough, I knew I had to share a recipe with you that had all these ingredients rolled into one.

On my show today, I’m featuring my recipe for a melt-in-your mouth, piping hot stromboli. It’s made with layers of deli meats and cheese wrapped up in pizza-like dough. Mmm mmm! And if you’d like the recipe for “Marketplace Stromboli,” so that when you’re out and about at the market you can pick up the ingredients and easily build your very own stromboli, check out this recipe.

Grilled Pita Pizza RE Make a Grilled Pita Pizza Party for Memorial Day

Grilled Pita Pizza

Living in a year-round warm climate, my husband and I grill out all the time. With Memorial Day coming, I thought I’d share one of our biggest grilling hits that’s different than the usual grilling fare, and super for a crowd! It’s Grilled Pita Pizza.

In fact, after I had my first Grilled Pita Pizza party a few years back, I shared the idea with Mr. Food, and he loved it, so we decided to create a show about it! What makes it special is that everyone gets involved in making their own pizza. It’s a fantastic icebreaker!

I put out all sorts of toppings from veggies to cheese and meats. I display them on a buffet table in unexpected containers like wine glasses and pitchers, and platters in all shapes and colors. I fill a fondue pot with warm pizza sauce, put the pitas in a bread basket and, when guests arrive, they make a bee-line straight to it, ’cause it’s so much fun to do! My husband is ready to cook up each one ’til it’s warm and melty – it takes just minutes! It’s a great way to feed a crowd on a budget, too.

So give this Grilled Pita Pizza party idea a try, or maybe even add your own special spin. After you do this at your next party, I’d love to hear from you. Around here, great show ideas come from suggestions made by everybody – and I welcome yours!
