Making Memories with Food

Monday, April 18th, 2011

This is a big week for family get-togethers! With Passover starting tonight and lasting for 8 days, and Good Friday and Easter later this week, everybody seems caught up in the flurry of preparing for big holiday meals.

No matter what holidays we celebrate now and all throughout the year, there are always “gotta have it” foods that we look forward to. That’s probably ’cause of the comforting memories they bring back of times when we enjoyed these traditional foods with our families and friends.

Mamas Chicken Soup RE Making Memories with Food

There's nothing as comforting as Mom's Chicken Soup, especially at Passover

There might be a favorite Easter ham recipe like our Apple Raisin Glazed Ham or maybe hot cross buns that you always like to make. Or maybe Passover “isn’t Passover” without Mom’s Chicken Soup or beef brisket.

Cranberry Hot Cross Buns RE Making Memories with Food

You're gonna love our variation on the traditional Hot Cross Buns. These are made with dried cranberries. Yum!

Of course, it’s always great to throw in some new recipes to keep our holiday menus interesting and fresh. Often these become traditions with us and our family’s next generation, so check out our yummy traditional and new recipes for Easter and Passover.

The Mr. Food team and I wish you all the best as you celebrate the spring holidays this week.

Preparing for Passover

Matzo Balls 04 06 01 RE Preparing for Passover

Passover is my favorite time of year. There are loads of spring traditions that tie in with Passover, from spring cleaning to serving spring foods.

My mom used to use Passover as her reason for cleaning EVERYTHING in the house.  And nobody got out of helping her with those chores!

Passover also means that there’s sure to be lots of fresh spring produce for our holiday meals. My family’s favorite is spring asparagus. And then there’s the Homemade Horseradish. Mmm mmm! My mom used to grate it by hand and we’d all nearly pass out from the strong fumes, but boy, was that ever good! There’s nothing like it! Fortunately, these days we have food processors to help us with this chore, so we can still enjoy the great tangy taste of fresh horseradish with all our Passover specialties and all our beef and other dishes year-round, too.

Passover is also a holiday that calls for lots of eggs. Eggs are in almost everything we make for Passover, from the fluffy matzo balls that float in our homemade chicken soup to our traditional Passover desserts like macaroons and, a new dessert we’ve been serving in the past few years, Flourless Chocolate Cake.

Gotta go help out with the spring cleaning and start on the horseradish, chicken soup and matzo balls. Hope you enjoy all the Passover recipes we have here for you, and please share some of your family’s favorites with us.

Honey is the unsung hero of recipe ingredients! I mean, honey goes well with everything, from dressings and sauces to chicken and pork, and, of course, desserts! Would you believe that here at MrFood.com we’ve got way over 100 recipes with honey!

You’re probably familiar with Honey Chicken, but have you tried Honey Bacon Barbecue Sauce, Citrus Honey Carrots,  or Honey Mousse? Honey makes ‘em all special.

Did you know these facts about honey:

  • Honey is a 100% natural sweetener, with no added ingredients.
  • Honey never spoils.
  • There are more than 300 varieties of honey, and they’re differentiated by their color, texture, aroma and flavor.
  • Honey provides quick energy, and it’s good for us, too, since it contains a variety of flavonoids and phenolic acids, which act as antioxidants, scavenging and eliminating free radicals.
  • Honey is used in loads of beauty products, from bar soap to lotions and moisturizers, not only because it’s all-natural but because it’s a humectant, which means that it attracts and retains moisture.

Besides being versatile and full of health benefits, honey just plain tastes good! Try honey today in any of our easy honey recipes. You’ll fall in love with it, too.
