10 Must-Have Burgers for Memorial Day

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

Sarah Schiear1 signature 10 Must Have Burgers for Memorial DayBLT Burger RE 10 Must Have Burgers for Memorial DayDid you know that the month of May is National Burger Month? I happen to think that this works out perfectly, considering that Memorial Day falls in the month of May – which also just happens to kick off grilling season!

We all have our favorite classic beef burger recipes – sometimes it’s not even a recipe, but a way you prepare them … that you could probably do with your eyes closed!

I know for me, it’s all about making sure to use plenty of salt and not to overwork the meat. I can stick with plain old ground beef and go that route, and I’ll get deliciously juicy and flavorful burgers every time. (We’ve included these tricks and lots more in this handy collection of burger cooking tips!)

Of course, I do always like to add cheese – that’s a given, right? (You guys surely remember how much I love cheese!) Anything from American to Cheddar to Brie floats my burger boat. But sometimes, I like to get even more creative …

Celebrating Memorial Day

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Memorial Day is right around the corner, so I thought this would be a perfect time to share a fun story about a unique place we recently taped some shows: the USS Ross, a Naval destroyer! That’s right – not all tapings happen here in the Mr. Food studio. We love taping on location, if you read my story about the Ireland webinar we did a few weeks back, you would know all about that!

MF Navy Ship Celebrating Memorial Day

So, back to the ship. That’s what the USS Ross is: a big, beautiful Navy ship. Did you know that I was in the Navy? I sure do miss those days. I was lucky enough to stay out of the fighting, and I truly enjoyed my time on the USS Oglethorpe. I met so many great people, and made some of the best memories of my life.

All of those memories came rushing back to me when we taped on the USS Ross. What a day we had! We rolled up our sleeves and served all of the sailors breakfast, and then just sat around and talked. What did the sailors miss most? Well, first of all their families, of course, but also the food! I remembered missing those very same things…

It was just so nice to spend time with all of these wonderful people who serve our country. Many of them thought I was from their own hometowns, since they remember me from their local news programs – I always get a kick out of that! They showed me all around the ship, even to the bridge of the ship (that’s Navy speak for cockpit) – it all brought back so many great memories.

One of my favorites was this one time we’d been out at sea for weeks without any fresh food. One of my buddies on the ship was a wizard in the galley – and his specialty was dessert! He whipped up the biggest vat of pudding I’d ever seen. Two of them headed down to a cooler below deck, and as one of them handed the giant bowl down, he let go a little too soon and down went the pudding! We didn’t let him live that one down for weeks!

You can have your own pudding party right at home – only please, don’t drop the bowl! – with one of my favorite recipes ever: this tasty banana version.

In memory of all of those who have served our country, both in the past and present, we here at the Mr. Food team salute you! May all of your days be filled with plenty of pudding, and plenty of… “OOH IT’S SO GOOD!!”

How do you plan to support or salute our troops this coming Monday? I’m hoping for at least 100 great ideas that I can share to honor those heroes, so please – do tell!

Reach out on Memorial Day and Beyond

Monday, May 31st, 2010
Mr Food aboard USS Porter 0510 300x200 Reach out on Memorial Day and Beyond

Me (Mr. Food) and Navy personnel aboard the USS Porter

Memorial Day is the traditional kickoff to the summer grilling season, so that usually means spending a fun day relaxing with family and friends and, of course, having a barbecue.

I wish a relaxing, tasty, great day to all of you. But before all the parties get underway, I hope you’ll find some way to remember and recognize all the members of the military, and their families, who’ve sacrificed so that we can all enjoy our freedoms.

I was recently reminded of my days serving in the Navy when I visited with U.S. Navy personnel aboard the USS Porter. These are terrific women and men whose job is to serve and protect us and all America stands for.

There are loads of Memorial Day parades and events all across the U.S. today, so please consider supporting one in your local community. I know it will be very meaningful to our military families, and to you and your family, too.

And if you’d like to make more of a difference after today, there are loads of ways to help our soldiers currently serving. You can send letters, care packages, or even reach out to help a military family in your community that might need a bit of help while their loved one is away. For more information on ways you can help, contact the USO.

Thank you for giving of yourself and making the most of each and every day. After all, every day we want a reason to say…”OOH IT’S SO GOOD!!”

Mr. Foods Memorial Day Message TN At Memorial Day, let’s support our troops and their families

A few months back, Mr. Food received a letter that was forwarded to me from a viewer who is part of a military family. I called her for Mr. Food and found out that her husband and kids, and many in her extended family, are currently serving or have served in the U.S. armed forces. She explained that, being in the service, they move around a lot. She told me how hard it is to constantly have to start her life over, and be away from everything she knows but, at the same time, her life is very rewarding.

One thing that this sweet lady said has always been a comfort to her is, wherever she’s lived, she could always turn on the TV and see Mr. Food, and that immediately made her feel at home. She doesn’t know this, but speaking to her moved me to tears. With her husband and sons proudly serving our country right now, as their family has for several generations, can you imagine that she was calling to thank US?! We are the ones who should be thanking them.

My best friend’s husband is in the military, as well. She told me last week that he will be leaving next month for three months in Afghanistan . She has two young children and no immediate family in the area to help her. This way of life takes a toll on her, but this is what military families do – for their country, OUR country. So it’s important that we not only support our troops, but their families, too. Without them taking care of business here, our soldiers couldn’t do what they do for all of us.

So, as you’re celebrating at Memorial Day barbecues with your family this year, take a moment to reflect on what Memorial Day is really all about. And if you want to know more about what you can do to support our military families, you’ll find lots of information at Military Families United.

Eating Lighter at Memorial Day Parties

Thursday, May 27th, 2010
Roasted Red Pepper Hummus 12 03 08 RE Eating Lighter at Memorial Day Parties

Light option for Memorial Day parties: Mr. Food's Roasted Red Pepper Hummus

Hello, fellow foodies…

It’s Jodi again. I can’t believe it’s almost Memorial Day weekend! It’s the unofficial beginning of summer, and that means swimsuit season. Ok, say it with me…”UGH!”

Anyway, I’m going to a BBQ this weekend, as I’m sure many of you are. That can often mean sitting around munching on chips, dips, and other super-fattening foods. Here are some things I do to avoid OVERindulging. (Don’t get me wrong, though…I indulge plenty!)

I try to eat something healthy before I head to a party or BBQ, so I don’t walk in super hungry.

If you’re looking for a lighter, healthier appetizer idea to serve at your own party, or to take with you to someone else’s, try our Roasted Red Pepper Hummus. The chick peas are a healthy protein and there’s just 2 tablespoons of healthy olive oil in the whole recipe. Serve it with beautiful fresh veggies for a super-healthy combo!

Something else I usually do is eat my hamburger without a bun. If I top it with ketchup, tomatoes and relish, I don’t even miss the bun! (And then I feel less guilty about eating dessert!) Speaking of dessert, I will take a small taste of whatever looks good, but I try to balance it out with some fresh fruit. (I’ll often volunteer to bring fruit, so I know it’ll be there.)

Whatever you do this weekend, have fun, stay safe and keep our troops in your thoughts and prayers.

Make a Grilled Pita Pizza Party for Memorial Day

Grilled Pita Pizza RE Make a Grilled Pita Pizza Party for Memorial Day

Grilled Pita Pizza

Living in a year-round warm climate, my husband and I grill out all the time. With Memorial Day coming, I thought I’d share one of our biggest grilling hits that’s different than the usual grilling fare, and super for a crowd! It’s Grilled Pita Pizza.

In fact, after I had my first Grilled Pita Pizza party a few years back, I shared the idea with Mr. Food, and he loved it, so we decided to create a show about it! What makes it special is that everyone gets involved in making their own pizza. It’s a fantastic icebreaker!

I put out all sorts of toppings from veggies to cheese and meats. I display them on a buffet table in unexpected containers like wine glasses and pitchers, and platters in all shapes and colors. I fill a fondue pot with warm pizza sauce, put the pitas in a bread basket and, when guests arrive, they make a bee-line straight to it, ’cause it’s so much fun to do! My husband is ready to cook up each one ’til it’s warm and melty – it takes just minutes! It’s a great way to feed a crowd on a budget, too.

So give this Grilled Pita Pizza party idea a try, or maybe even add your own special spin. After you do this at your next party, I’d love to hear from you. Around here, great show ideas come from suggestions made by everybody – and I welcome yours!

Aboard the USS Porter in honor of Memorial Day

Mr Food Navy 225x300 Aboard the USS Porter in honor of Memorial Day

Can you believe this is me? I wore a hat then, too, but a different kind!

Hi, fellow foodies. Did you recognize me in this photo? Did you know I was in the Navy? Yes, sir, I served my country and, thankfully, I have lots of good memories of those days. I’m not saying it was easy, but I did learn a lot of valuable lessons and make lifelong friends from that experience.

I’ve been thinking about those days a lot lately, with Memorial Day almost here. In fact, I took my camera crew with me to visit an active-duty ship when it was in port recently for Fleet Week in Fort Lauderdale. We went aboard the USS Porter, a U.S. Navy fleet guided missile destroyer, and we checked out how more than 800 meals are prepared and served to the ship’s crew every day!

To commemorate Memorial Day, I wanted to be sure that those currently serving our country, and their families, know that we’re all thinking of them and that we appreciate their sacrifices.

I have lots of great Memorial Day recipes for your parties and get-togethers, and I hope you’ll be using them. But before starting your festivities, I hope you’ll take time to remember those who have served, and continue to serve, in the military to keep us all safe and able to celebrate our freedoms.
