Sarah Schiear1 signature Cookie Recipes Worthy of SharingTriple Chocolate Chip Cookies RE Cookie Recipes Worthy of SharingCookies are one of those desserts that are just meant to be shared. Already in perfectly portioned individual serving sizes, it sure is easier to share a plate of cookies than a cake or a pie! They also transport well, making them a great choice for bake sales or delivering to a friend – and they even mail well, so you can send them to a friend or family member who lives far away!

In today’s newsletter, we’re sharing some of our favorite cookie recipes. And we’re asking you to share your favorite recipes with us!

That’s right, if you have a favorite cookie recipe you’ve always wanted to share – now’s your chance! Simply write it out in the comments below. Be sure to tell us about the cookie in your own words, and why you love it so much. We’ll even share your recipes with our readers in our newsletter!

That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Patty in kitchen OR 300x225 That’s the Way the Cookie CrumblesPatty Rosenthal That’s the Way the Cookie CrumblesIt was just another typical day in the Mr. Food Test Kitchen. Well, now that I’m thinking of it, there are no typical days in our Test Kitchen… icon smile That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles

I wanted to share a little story that happened the other day when I was testing some new desserts for the website and our TV segment. I made a batch of chocolate chip cookie cups that I was going to  fill with various fillings.  The idea was that you could put just about anything in a cookie cup and it would taste good.

Anyway, the timer went off, I grabbed a pot holder and as I was taking the mini cookie cups out of the oven, the pan slipped out of my hand and and fell onto the oven door. Well, so much for that batch! And so I spent the next 20 minutes cleaning up my mess.

The rain couldn’t keep hungry dessert-seekers away this past Saturday at The Poison Cup Wine & Art Boutique in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, where Chicago food bloggers joined together for an important cause: raising funds to help eliminate child hunger.

I was thrilled to be a part of the Second Annual Food Blogger Bake Sale and brought one of my favorite Mr. Food desserts: PB&J Bars! I was joined by bloggers from our sister sites, Blair of RecipeLion blog and Matt of FaveDiets blog, and we had a blast meeting sweets-lovers who braved the elements in support of foodie fundraising.

Foodie Blogger Bake Sale Chicago 300x203 2nd Annual Food Blogger Bake Sale for Share Our Strength

Together with online donations, we raised $1040 for Share Our Strength‘s Great American Bake Sale! Good old-fashioned   bake sales were held across the country on behalf of Share Our Strength, and more than twenty local Chicago bloggers came out with desserts than ranged from Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles to Halfway Cookies and Tropical Cupcakes.

Bloggers who baked and volunteered include Marvi Clemente, Kate BernotAnna Goldberg, Jackie Kolber, Richard Rocha, Caroline Supataraporn, Vanessa Druckman, Emily Paster, Kelly Alesso, and Kristin Hilleary. The atmosphere was lively and the spread was fantastic: each blogger brought something uniquely delectable to the table – literally! Our baked goodies were spread out on a series of interconnected tables, creating one vast line of treats! Hungry customers stopped by each booth to purchase as much or as little as they pleased. We chatted with fellow bloggers about our recipes and, as the day began to wind down, even got to sample a few treats! Despite the weather, it was a wonderful event that benefits a great cause.

Food for thought:

  • More than 17 million kids in America are at risk of hunger. That’s nearly 1 in 4.
  • 15.5 million kids in America live in poverty.
  • 20.1 million children benefit from SNAP (food stamps).
  • 19 million kids get a free or reduced-price school lunch on an average school day.
  • Only 9.4 million kids get a free or reduced-price school breakfast on an average school day.
  • Just 1 in 6 eligible kids get free summer meals.

Every cookie sold and every dollar donated can make a huge impact.  Here are some examples:

  • $1 can help provide a hungry child with 10 healthy meals.
  • $4 can help provide a child facing hunger with a backpack full of healthy food over a weekend when school meals are not available.
  • $9 can help connect a child with healthy lunches during summer when school is out.
  • $35 can help a child care center provide free afterschool snacks and suppers to at-risk children all year long.
  • $65 can provide a grab-n-go breakfast cart to an elementary school so that every student starts every school day with a healthy meal.

Our page for online donations will be open through the end of the national fund-raising season so if your family or friends would like to make a donation on our team’s behalf, follow this link. If you’d like to see the complete list of blogger bake sales throughout the country and donate to a team in your area, please visit In Good Taste, Chicago host Maris Callahan’s blog.

Edible Gifts from Your Own Kitchen

Polka Dot Cookies RE Edible Gifts from Your Own Kitchen

Polka Dot Cookies from Mr. Food are a fun twist on traditional chocolate chip cookies, and they make a great holiday gift!

From Mr. Food Team Member Jodi

When my kids were younger and each had only one teacher, I used to spend time shopping for that just-right gift for the holidays. Now that they’re both in high school, and each has 7 teachers, plus the dance teacher, plus the college advisor, plus friends who they want to give a little gift to, there’s just no way I have the time (or the money) to shop for something special for each person.

A few years ago, I started making edible gifts. A dozen cookies in a pretty holiday-themed container (there are some really cute Chinese take-out shaped boxes) makes a great teacher gift. I really like to use the Polka Dot Cookies recipe here on the Mr. Food site. They only use 4 ingredients, and being a chocolate cookie with white chocolate chips, they’re a nice change from your typical chocolate chip cookie.

Last year, my daughter helped me make Chocolate-Dipped Pretzels to give to her friends. We had fun shopping for different decorations. We used white chocolate and light blue decorating sugar for her friends who celebrate Hanukkah, and milk chocolate with a red and green candy drizzle for those who celebrate Christmas. The ways to decorate these are endless! How about crushing up candy canes and rolling the dipped pretzels in those? We found really cute holiday-themed cellophane bags to put them in, and tied them with pretty ribbons. It was fun, and much less expensive than buying all those gifts!

Need a hostess gift for a party? Why not try Chocolate Wreath Fudge? You can buy an inexpensive plastic holiday-themed platter to put the fudge wreath on, and give it as part of the gift. Or how about baking up some quick-breads, like Chocolate Chip Cranberry Bread? Homemade breads are very holiday-festive wrapped in pretty cellophane.

I’m always looking for new edible gift ideas, so if you have any to add, please let me know! Happy Holidays!

pink and white cookies1 1024x768 Mr. Food Cookie Recipe Helps Raise Funds to Fight Breast Cancer

Try my sister's pink and white version of Mr. Food's Black and White Cookies

From Mr. Food Team Member Jaime

We all want to help any way we can.

My sister and I share recipe ideas all the time for everything from weeknight dinners to entertaining and pot luck lunches. Since I am a self-proclaimed foodie and I work for Mr. Food, I am exposed to new recipes every day…and I love to share them!

When she told me what she needed a recipe for this time, I made it my mission to help her. Her office has a community service team that holds a fundraiser each month for a different organization. Since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they decided to have a bake sale to benefit Pink On Purpose. My sister was looking for an idea for something pink to bake. She said they already had several pink cupcakes, so she was looking for something different. I offered her the Mr. Food recipe for Half Moon Cookies, but instead of chocolate and vanilla, I suggested she substitute with pink and white frosting. She loved the idea and decided to give it a try. Not only did they look great, but everyone loved them and they sold like hotcakes…or, should I say, Half Moon Cookies!

My sister then told me that her husband’s aunt, who is a breast cancer survivor, is coming to visit her this weekend, so she is going to make another batch of these delicious cookies. This time she is going to frost them not only with pink and white, but pink and chocolate as well, for a little variety. So, I was thinking…it’s football season. Why not try them in your favorite team colors, or how about orange and black for Halloween? All you need is a little food coloring and the possibilities are endless!

Most importantly, money was raised to help a worthwhile cause and, in some very small way, I feel like I helped. Well, me and Mr. Food!
