Tell me you’ve heard about this new craze that is mug cake recipes!
That’s right—we’re talking individual cake recipes you can have ready in 5 minutes or less. Perfect for those times when you’re craving something sweet, but you also know it’d be a bad idea to make an entire batch of brownies for just yourself.
The funny thing about this new trend is that we’ve had a recipe for Fudgy “Cup” Cakes for many years! Our version uses shortcut ingredients like cake mix and pudding mix, which makes it even easier—but my favorite part about this recipe is the suggestion to use this idea for gifts. You can divide individual portions into little plastic baggies, and then stick them inside cute coffee mugs (microwave-safe, of course) and give them as gifts! I don’t know about you, but I think this is pretty dang adorable.
And even though I love chocolate just as much as the next gal, I knew there had to be many more creations out there. I was right! I found everything from strawberry to coffee cake, and all of my favorite picks can be found here in our new Pinterest board: Foodies Do Desserts in a Mug! Are you guys on Pinterest? I sure hope so, because I don’t want to be held responsible for the new addiction the introduction would surely create.

Which one looks the best to you? Or, do you have an idea you’d like me to send to the Test Kitchen for creation? I’ll admit, I’ve got a few ideas of my own.

What a great idea! I love to bake for my friends and family, especially around the holidays. But, for the same reasons it’s a bad plan to make a whole pan of brownies for yourself, it’s sometimes not the best idea to gift a full order of 24 cupcakes to a couple of friends or a small family. Last Christmas, I saw half of my carefully prepared Very Merry Mocha Peppermint Cupcakes end up in the trash because my family had received so many treats. I can’t wait to divide everyone’s favorite cakes into individually-sized servings this year!
Yes, I think these individual servings will be just the trick! Plus, you can customize each person’s order. Problem solved!
I love all kinds of mug cakes. Fun treats for college students! I collect these and pass them on to my nieces and friends. Thanks for all the new ideas!
You are welcome, Terri! Thanks for your comment!
Ok I love these ideas and the one that really got me excited with the biscoff and I’d love to try it immediately. However, I have no clue what biscoff spread is or where to find it or how to make it? Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks…and oh man, I’m starving for all these recipes…can you tell I have a gigantic sweet tooth? LOL.
Biscoff spread can be found in some grocery stores near the peanut butter. It’s a spread made from cookies! You can also order it online if they don’t sell it at your local grocer: http://www.amazon.com/Biscoff-Spread—-14-oz/dp/B005IZHXGG/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1340918762&sr=8-4&keywords=biscoff
These are great. There is a book 101 Recipes for Microwave Mug Cakes By Stacey J Miller Very good.
Thanks, Lois! I”ll have to check that one out!
Had to use 70% on my Microwave for 3 mins. I got a new one so I have to keep trying it out. My first Mug Cake was a flop.
This is perfect on so many levels! I’ve been looking for a way to engage portion control with sweets and this seems like the answer. Baked goods are yummy year round, but I enjoy them especially during the holiday season because they can be festive, fun to cook with the family and a fitting end to the stuffing-your-face period of the day otherwise known as dinner.
I really like that you offered up the idea of making the cake mugs gifts too, they’re so incredibly cute and look fun to decorate. I’m definitely going to try this. Thanks!
Thanks, Jill! We love mug cakes – they’re just so portable!
