“Until I discovered cooking, I was never really interested in anything.” — Julia Child
Hi, I’m Sarah – and I’m genuinely obsessed with food. Not obsessed in a strange way (well, unless squealing like a pig at the thought of waking up to an entire day of baking or cooking is considered strange – in which case, I’m afraid I’m guilty), but in a passionate way. I love food. I love to eat, I love to cook it, and I love to serve it – especially to those I love. Food excites me. Whether I’m cooking a simple weeknight meal or an elaborate dinner party menu for eight, I think food should be special.
Favorite Mr. Food recipe: Right now, I’m loving Cheesy Grits and Pink Lemonade Pie – but because we’re constantly testing and tasting recipes, I’ve got new favorites all the time!
How often do I cook? 4-5 times per week
Who am I cooking for? My boyfriend, Daniel
How long have I been cooking? It’s been about 3 years. I cooked here and there in college, but it wasn’t until after I graduated and met Dan that I really got into it.
My biggest challenge in the kitchen: Getting dinner on the table with a very full-time job. My solution? Cook enough to have leftovers, which is pretty easy to do when you’re only cooking for two.
What profession best describes me in the kitchen? Circus ringmaster. Mostly when I’m entertaining or making elaborate meals – which is often! – I find that my kitchen turns into a bit of a circus. I don’t mind, I like it that way – as long as there’s order, which is how I like to keep it.
The kitchen appliance I couldn’t live without: My stand mixer. My boyfriend’s sister received it as a wedding gift and gave it to me because she never used it. Can’t thank you enough, Dina!
My ultimate meal: Truffle mac ‘n cheese, a buttery filet cooked to a perfect medium-rare, and some sort of crazy-rich chocolate cake
The one food I can’t stand: “Fishy” shellfish. I can’t stand when crab or shrimp taste too fishy – I prefer them to taste nice ‘n fresh
The food that instantly takes me back to childhood is: Cheez-Its. Still can’t resist them to this day…
If I were a spice, I would be: Cayenne pepper. Every time I cook with it, I double the amount the recipe calls for. My motto? If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen!
My favorite food that grows from the earth is: Mushrooms! There’s nothing better than a giant skillet brimming with mushrooms cooking in butter… That’s the greatest smell on earth!
If I could have dinner with anyone in the world, dead or alive, it would be: My grandmother. I have her to thank for my love of cheese and chocolate, and I’d love to be able to share my creations with her.
Sweet tooth, or salt-craver? What’s my weakness? Both! Anything chocolate – the darker and richer, the better. And for salty, it would be jalapeno potato chips. I won’t stop until they’re taken from me!
