Being surrounded by lots of great food is nothing new to any of us in the Test Kitchen. We know that is not the same for everyone around the country. Yes, we appreciate that we are blessed.
So as we have been doing for the last 4 years, the Mr. Food Test Kitchen Team once again will be rolling up our chef coat sleeves as we run the kitchen at a local church to feed over 1,200 people who aren’t as fortunate.
For us, this is what Thanksgiving is all about, and we’re thankful to have the opportunity to give back to our community through food, which is what we love most.
The night before the Thanksgiving with the help of about 50 volunteers, we roast and carve the turkeys, prep the sweet potatoes and make hundreds of pounds of what is now our famous green bean casserole. By the time we get done carving 100+ turkeys, let me tell you…it’s time to hit the showers.
On the big day itself, we gather early to start the stuffing, whip the mashed potatoes and portion out the desserts that were so generously donated. At 11 am the doors will open and whoever needs a hot holiday meal is welcome. Talk about mixed emotions. We feel great that we are helping, but on the other hand it is so sad to see whole families who are down and out and look so forward to this meal.
I have to tell you when we are all done and cleaned up, all the volunteers are thinking the same thing. We should be the ones thanking those who we feed that day as they gave our holiday the true meaning it deserves.
