Do you have Olympic fever? With the 2012 Summer Olympics before us, we’re all ready to watch our favorite athletes compete for gold. Now, while I’m more of a Winter Olympics fan, I’m still getting anxious for the start of the competitions and of course, the opening and closing ceremonies. Seeing so many incredible athletes from all different nationalities and backgrounds come together in one place really helps exemplify the spirit of the games.
To celebrate the heritages of all of these great nations, we thought we should share some of our favorite ethnic recipes, from appetizers to desserts, and have you decide which one deserves the gold. Take a peek at these ten countries’ recipes, and help us decide which one should come out on top.
Australia:

We’re going down under for this Australian dessert: Chocolate Pavlova. Named after a beloved ballerina, this chocolate ‘n’ fruit dish is a great way to indulge after a long and busy week.
China:
These traditional Chinese Almond Rounds are supposed to help bring you good luck!
France:
These Mixed Berry Ice Cream Crepes are reminiscent of those you might find in a Parisian café. Light and fruity, it’s the perfect dessert for summer.
Germany:

We’ve got a traditional German Potato Salad coming your way! Ideal for potlucks or even as a side dish, this deli salad works great any time of the year.
Greece:

We’ve got a shortcut version of one of our favorite Greek dishes with this Easy Moussaka! With tasty layers of eggplant and beef, you certainly can’t go wrong.
Great Britain:

There’s no way we could forget our wonderful host country, especially when they have a dinnertime favorite like Cottage Pie! This dish is a comfort food classic, perfect for your next family dinner.
Italy:
We love this twist on an Italian café classic. This Cannoli Cheesecake has a light ‘n’ creamy texture that complements this lovely summer weather.
Poland:

We can’t seem to get enough layered dinner recipes, especially when they have a distinct Polish flair like this recipe for Pierogi Lasagna.
Spain:

Nothing beats the taste of a fresh tomato relish on your favorite dish while kicking back to watch the Olympic Games. This Tomato Festival Relish is not only a crowd-pleaser, but it’s versatile too!
United States:
While there were so many contenders for the best American recipe, this Yankee Doodle Macaroni Casserole just jumped above all the rest. With it’s classic family appeal, you really can’t go wrong.
Which of these recipes would you award gold, silver, and bronze? Share with us in the comments!

These options are not just energy-boosting recipies, but also can help athletes fill out to their required target weight for their chosen sport. But, even more interesting about these international choices for all non-athletes, is the high “comfort food-level” of the choices. Top marks Gold must go for the “Mixed Berry Ice Cream Crepes.” They most certainly are “Parfait” in their combination of bistro-inspired French crepes, and the seasonal, sun-infused sweetness of mixed berries. They are exemplary for this list in the site.
Clearing the hurdles next would be from the recent host, Britain, and their “Cottage Pie,” or “Shepherd’s Pie,” as the more common name across the pond. All food groups–even with the new food pyramid–are supplied and baked under a floating protective layer of Idaho, or Ireland, potato gloriousness. There’s nothing like ingesting a properly cooked Pie like this while waiting for the technical program of the figure skating. A most relevant choice here.
Thanks, Tony! We’re so glad you like them!
I love this idea! It’s always fun to be introduced to foreign fare.
I’m going to award Germany the gold. I love potato salad, and this one doesn’t use mayonnaise! A healthier version of potato salad? Don’t mind if i do. I might even swap the bacon for turkey bacon for an even healthier option.
In second, France. Not only am I obsessed with France in all it’s glory…but crepes? Always to die for. A nice, light dessert option!
And with the bronze, our beloved United States. As stated, you cannot go wrong with the old faithful yankee doodle macaroni. Anything involving that much cheese deserves a medal.
…As an American, I feel guilty not awarding the US gold, but it’s nice to know I have no bias!
Germany certainly does deserve the gold on this one. Who doesn’t love potato salad? Love your idea for swapping out the bacon for turkey bacon!
