It also makes for perfect timing with the 4th of July – which is centered around backyard barbecues and all of those famous summer party foods.

Now, one thing I love about baked beans is that you can very easily doctor-up store-bought or canned baked beans for a shortcut homemade side dish everyone will love. A little of this, a little of that – and you can make ‘em your own!

I happen to think that this works out perfectly, considering that Memorial Day falls in the month of May – which also just happens to kick off grilling season!

We all have our favorite classic beef burger recipes – sometimes it’s not even a recipe, but a way you prepare them … that you could probably do with your eyes closed!

I know for me, it’s all about making sure to use plenty of salt and not to overwork the meat. I can stick with plain old ground beef and go that route, and I’ll get deliciously juicy and flavorful burgers every time. (We’ve included these tricks and lots more in this handy collection of burger cooking tips!)

Of course, I do always like to add cheese – that’s a given, right? (You guys surely remember how much I love cheese!) Anything from American to Cheddar to Brie floats my burger boat. But sometimes, I like to get even more creative …

Fun Birthday Cupcake Recipes & Ideas

Kelly Rusin1 signature Fun Birthday Cupcake Recipes & IdeasFebruary has been a month of celebrations for us here at the Mr. Food Test Kitchen. We’ve had 3 birthdays in a row! Which means cake, cake, and more cake! Oh – and fun birthday hats, too!

Our first February birthday was Sarah, our food editor extraordinaire, celebrating with a nice, big chocolate and marshmallow fluff cake, yumm-y! Doesn’t she look cute in the “birthday sombrero”?

Next was Patty, our Test Kitchen director who was pleased to have a chocolate-mint custard cake; it’s just like an ice cream cake only better! Check out her lovely birthday tiara, pretty fancy huh? And the party plate says it all… “Another Year of Fabulous!”

Lastly, yours truly, I celebrated at the “Happiest Place on Earth” (Walt Disney World) and when I came back I was greeted with some delicious lemon meringue cupcakes. I mean really, who doesn’t love a fun cupcake?!

This year is no exception. I haven’t seen one movie up for Best Picture – not one! I’m thinking about either renting The Help or going to see The Artist at an old-fashioned theater (which I think will go just perfectly with an almost totally silent, old-fashioned film) this week so that I can at least be somewhat informed. Well, that and, I really want to see those movies!

What I love about the Academy Awards is that even if you haven’t seen all of the movies, it’s still fun to get a group together and watch all of the celebrities and the show itself.

One of the ways I like to do this is by making a few dishes inspired by the plots of the movies up for awards. It’s easy enough to look up what each movie is about, and then pick a few recipes that match the theme. That way, you also aren’t totally clueless when you’re watching!

So, I’ve gone ahead and selected a few of the nominated movies for Best Picture, and created a menu for each. Pick a dish from each, or make ‘em all if you want to celebrate your favorite movie.

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is traditionally the last day for Catholics to indulge (and sometimes over-indulge) before the beginning of Lent.

In New Orleans, they celebrate decadently with huge parades and throw tons of colorful beaded necklaces from floats. There are also lots of masquerade balls, with partygoers wearing beautiful and intricate masks.

Mardi Gras season has also inspired some pretty indulgent food. One of the most well-known Mardi Gras foods is the King Cake. (No, it has nothing to do with Elvis, though we have a cake for him, too!) King Cakes are often twisted or braided sweet dough, topped with a sugary glaze and purple, green and gold sprinkles. (Those are the traditional Mardi Gras colors.) Usually, a plastic toy or baby is baked inside and the person who gets the “king” toy in their piece of cake is supposed to host the next party.
