I think of all of those things as well, but around here at the Mr. Food office, I am reminded of a trip that Mr. Food  and Howard, his right-hand man, took to Ireland a couple of years ago. They brought back plenty of photos, videos and some amazing recipes from the areas they visited.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I am going to share some of the videos with you that they shot. (Just click the links to see the recipes and corresponding video.) They all have spectacular views of Ireland, along with mouth-watering recipes from the regions. Perhaps they will inspire you to cook something other than the usual this St. Patrick’s Day in your home.

Idaho 1855 RE Home of the Best Potatoes in the World

Art & I at Bronco Stadium

Howard Rosenthal signature Home of the Best Potatoes in the WorldIf you love potatoes like I do, I bet you would have loved to tag along as Art and I (a.k.a. Mr. Food) went to Idaho this past week. Yep, Idaho…where the best potatoes in the world are grown. We went as part of our quest to learn more about foods that are grown in the “good ol’ USA.”

While we were there, we went over to the Idaho Potato Commission’s office to find out just what makes their potatoes so unique. And although the answer is really more complex than I want to share here, it all comes down to the rich soil they grow in and the ideal growing climate.

If You Haven’t, You Should…

Howard Rosenthal signature If You Havent, You Should...Disney Food n Wine 2011 RE If You Havent, You Should...No, I’m not talking about brushing your teeth before bed or sending a hand written thank you note, although you should do both. I’m talking about going to Epcot at Disney World in Orlando, FL for the International Food and Wine Festival. You won’t even believe all of the great international flavors you can taste at this place. Click here for a special recipe and video footage from our trip.

It only runs for a few more weeks so I’m not saying you have to fly across the country to get there this year, but it should probably be added to your “bucket list.”  If you’re within driving distance, then maybe grab the kids, grandkids, or a neighbor and head there this weekend.

Our Trip to Kennett Square, Mushroom Capital of the World

Art at Kennett Inn with those great dishes...

Howard Rosenthal signature Our Trip to Kennett Square, Mushroom Capital of the WorldIt’s National Mushroom Month, and if you love mushrooms like I do, then I bet you wish you were part of our recent trip to Kennett Square, PA - Mushroom Capital of the World.

What a visit it was… Just pulling into town felt like we were rolling back time. Our first stop was the Kennett Square Inn, a quaint restaurant nestled in downtown Kennett Square. There we tasted the best stuffed mushrooms I ever had. They were brimming with crumbled sausage and topped with a light cream sauce, yum yum yum. Then the chef brought out a  filet of beef smothered, yes I mean really smothered with all sorts of exotic mushrooms that were sautéed. Another home-run in our book.

Mr. Food Visits Amish Country

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Hi, all! Art here. I just got back from a visit to Lancaster, PA – otherwise known as Amish country!

MrFood Farm stand RE Mr. Food Visits Amish Country

We were there to tape a few shows that you’ll get to see in September. Boy, I love visiting Amish country. The food is so tasty and the people are just so nice. It’s a simple life, and a good one.

I think I love the roadside stands the most. We stopped at one, shown in the picture, where we met two new friends. Martha, 11, and her little brother, Amos, 9, were just the best. The “manager” and “assistant manager,” I called them. Ha! Well, Martha and Amos had all sorts of homemade baked goods for sale, like whoopie pies, cherry crumble pies, lots of relishes and jams, and fresh produce, too. Their parents made all the goodies from scratch, right up in the farmhouse Martha pointed at when we asked. There was a big corn field right there, what a sight!

Keep your eyes open for these shows in September, you won’t want to miss ‘em!

Have you ever been to Amish country? Maybe not, but I betcha you’ve had some good Amish cookin’? Be sure to tell me your favorite recipe below.

And just in case you need ‘em,  click here for some of our favorite Amish recipes!

Celebrating Memorial Day

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Memorial Day is right around the corner, so I thought this would be a perfect time to share a fun story about a unique place we recently taped some shows: the USS Ross, a Naval destroyer! That’s right – not all tapings happen here in the Mr. Food studio. We love taping on location, if you read my story about the Ireland webinar we did a few weeks back, you would know all about that!

MF Navy Ship Celebrating Memorial Day

So, back to the ship. That’s what the USS Ross is: a big, beautiful Navy ship. Did you know that I was in the Navy? I sure do miss those days. I was lucky enough to stay out of the fighting, and I truly enjoyed my time on the USS Oglethorpe. I met so many great people, and made some of the best memories of my life.

All of those memories came rushing back to me when we taped on the USS Ross. What a day we had! We rolled up our sleeves and served all of the sailors breakfast, and then just sat around and talked. What did the sailors miss most? Well, first of all their families, of course, but also the food! I remembered missing those very same things…

It was just so nice to spend time with all of these wonderful people who serve our country. Many of them thought I was from their own hometowns, since they remember me from their local news programs – I always get a kick out of that! They showed me all around the ship, even to the bridge of the ship (that’s Navy speak for cockpit) – it all brought back so many great memories.

One of my favorites was this one time we’d been out at sea for weeks without any fresh food. One of my buddies on the ship was a wizard in the galley – and his specialty was dessert! He whipped up the biggest vat of pudding I’d ever seen. Two of them headed down to a cooler below deck, and as one of them handed the giant bowl down, he let go a little too soon and down went the pudding! We didn’t let him live that one down for weeks!

You can have your own pudding party right at home – only please, don’t drop the bowl! – with one of my favorite recipes ever: this tasty banana version.

In memory of all of those who have served our country, both in the past and present, we here at the Mr. Food team salute you! May all of your days be filled with plenty of pudding, and plenty of… “OOH IT’S SO GOOD!!”

How do you plan to support or salute our troops this coming Monday? I’m hoping for at least 100 great ideas that I can share to honor those heroes, so please – do tell!

My First Webinar: All About Ireland!

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Do you know what a webinar is? It’s just a fancy term for a meeting, really – a meeting held online. We set up this meeting so that we could come right into your living rooms and talk with you – and anyone else who’s interested – about our upcoming trip to Ireland!

That’s right, this past Monday night, my creative director, Howard, and I met with our friends at CIE Tours (they’re the best when it comes to trips to Ireland!), Brian and Margaret, right here at our Mr. Food studio. We sat around and drank Irish coffee, lots of Guinness, and boy was that Irish cheese good! Most of all, we were excited to answer all of your questions about our trip to one of my favorite countries in the world.

One of the most important things we wanted to share with you was why we’re hosting this tour in the first place. It’s because a couple of years ago, we went to Ireland to produce a few shows, and we had the time of our lives!

BTS Feature Ireland 300x191 My First Webinar: All About Ireland!

After giving you an overview of the trip we all shared some of our favorite stories about the last time we were there. One of my favorite memories was a show we shot in a pub by the name of Larkin’s. Oh boy, I can’t wait to go back! We had so much fun listening to their live Irish music, and they even taught us how to do Irish broom dancing! We learned right there on the street, and everyone got a good laugh at my two left feet when it comes to Irish dancing. I’ve been practicing… So you better watch out!

And then, there was all of the traditional Irish food we ate… And did we ever eat! Can’t wait try all the foods we ate? You could try a taste at home right now by making a batch of Dressed-Up Irish Stew, or one of my personal favorites, this Beef and Guinness Casserole.

I may just have to host another webinar sometime soon, because it sure was neat to be able to respond to your questions in real-time. We sure hope everyone who watched at home had as much fun as we did! We can’t wait to go back to Ireland and create even more great memories. If you’ve never been, what are you waiting for? I bet you’ll think it’s… “OOH IT’S SO GOOD!!”
