Jessica TN Recipes Using Leftovers: What to Do After the HolidaysChicken Hash RE Recipes Using Leftovers: What to Do After the HolidaysAt the end of each holiday, there’s a brief window of time where the only thing you and your family eat are leftovers. You’ve just returned from a big ol’ barbecue filled with good friends and good food. Inevitably, there’s a little too much food to go around, and suddenly, you’re stuck with an entire extra tray of kabobs, half of a large bowl of macaroni salad, and a dozen brownies too many.

While you may have resigned yourself to leftovers from here to eternity, you can still find ways to shake up lunch and dinner. Why eat the same thing every night when you can reuse those basic ingredients and get something entirely different? You’ll use up the food before it goes bad and get to mix things up at the dinner table. Win-win!

Check out some of our favorite holiday leftover recipes!

What is the Meaning of Easter Eggs, Anyway?

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Howard Rosenthal signature What is the Meaning of Easter Eggs, Anyway?Easter Egg Bread 03 18 11 RE What is the Meaning of Easter Eggs, Anyway?Easter is right around the corner and that means it’s time for chocolate bunnies, Aunt Mary’s Easter egg bread and of course … decorated Easter eggs. But depending your upbringing and maybe how old you are, Easter eggs can vary greatly.

I actually was curious about what the significance of the egg was to this holiday. After all, bunnies don’t lay eggs, chickens do – unless something changed since I took high school biology. But after checking out a few sources, and like everything in life, there are many stories … the one that seems to be the most common is that the egg represents “new life”. In the eyes of Christianity, it’s a symbol of resurrection.

Welcome Spring with Brand-New Menus from our Test Kitchen

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Patty Rosenthal Welcome Spring with Brand New Menus from our Test KitchenCrabmeat Stuffed Salmon RE 1 Welcome Spring with Brand New Menus from our Test KitchenIt’s the first day of Spring and that means we’re starting to see tulips poking their colorful heads out of the ground, chocolate Easter bunnies replacing all the St. Patty’s day stuff at the store, and I – for some crazy reason – start to cook differently at home. Alright, I’ll admit it may be a bit odd, especially this year when the weather around the country all winter was ridiculously warm.

It’s just something I do. It’s sort of my way of officially welcoming spring.

So good-bye, slow cooker (that will come out again in the summer when I want to keep the kitchen cool) and hello, freshness. This Crabmeat-Stuffed Salmon, today’s TV recipe, is my new favorite go-to quick and easy meal for healthy weeknight cooking. And you can bet I’m tucking away my cobbler and crisp recipes and digging out my favorite Lemon Cheese Bars and Coconut Pecan Parfait. As a matter of fact, let me share with you a few menus that my family will be celebrating the season with in the weeks to come.

Jaime Gross signature Traditional Irish Recipes & Fun Video Footage for St. Patricks DayIrish Coffee 3 15 11 RE Traditional Irish Recipes & Fun Video Footage for St. Patricks DayWhen you think of St. Patrick’s Day, what comes to mind? Corned beef and cabbage? Green beer? Wearing green clothes?

I think of all of those things as well, but around here at the Mr. Food office, I am reminded of a trip that Mr. Food  and Howard, his right-hand man, took to Ireland a couple of years ago. They brought back plenty of photos, videos and some amazing recipes from the areas they visited.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I am going to share some of the videos with you that they shot. (Just click the links to see the recipes and corresponding video.) They all have spectacular views of Ireland, along with mouth-watering recipes from the regions. Perhaps they will inspire you to cook something other than the usual this St. Patrick’s Day in your home.

Reuben Loaf RE St. Pattys Day: 10 Takes on the Reuben, from Casseroles to DipSarah Schiear1 signature St. Pattys Day: 10 Takes on the Reuben, from Casseroles to DipWith St. Patrick’s Day coming up, I got to thinking about my favorite Irish recipes. I ate corned beef and cabbage in the Crock-Pot growing up (one of the few things my dad knew how to make, other than Velveeta Shells & Cheese) and I loved it, but I haven’t had it in years.

The one recipe that stuck out in my mind was the reuben. I normally eat it out at a restaurant, and I why on earth have I never made this at home? I don’t have an answer for you – so I thought, what better time to try it than this St. Patty’s Day?

I did a search on MrFood.com and I realized we had a lot more recipes than I’d bargained for. There are decisions to be made! Tough ones, at that.

From macaroni salad to a reuben bake, we’ve infused the flavor of a reuben into pretty much everything. Now the question is: Should I stick to the classic reuben sandwich that I was dreaming of in the first place, or should I switch it up to one of these tasty-looking recipes?
