Healthy, Quick Dinner Ideas for Kids

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Jaime Gross signature Healthy, Quick Dinner Ideas for KidsPopcorn Lollipops RE Healthy, Quick Dinner Ideas for KidsSo, here we are, the beginning of a new year and ready to start eating healthier. As a household, we all need to make some changes for the positive.

Hubby and I are on board – no problem. The baby is now a year old and still very happy eating whatever I put in front of her: sweet potatoes, lean proteins, avocado and squash. Then there is our 12-year old…more of a challenge.

We have a rule in our house; the kitchen is not a restaurant and I am not a short-order cook. I will make dinner and you will eat it. We try to involve him in planning the meals for the week and this way he has more of an interest. We can’t have hamburgers, tacos and pizza every night. I figured there have to be lighter, healthier versions of these kid-friendly foods out there.

Traditional Chanukah Recipes

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Jaime Gross signature Traditional Chanukah RecipesHanukkah Butter Cookies RE Traditional Chanukah RecipesNext to Thanksgiving, Chanukah is my second-favorite holiday. It’s a festive holiday that’s all about fun. It’s also a holiday that’s rich with tradition. In a lot of families, you can’t discuss tradition without mentioning food.

When I was a child, every year my mom made potato latkes for Chanukah. Now that I’m a mom, it’s something that’s very important for me to do for my own children. Every year, I break out the potatoes, onions and oil and fry a big platter of potato latkes. I have tried many recipes, but the one I keep coming back to is from the Mr. Food Test Kitchen and it’s the Perfect Potato Pancakes.

Potato Pancakes & More Recipes for Holiday Visitors

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Helayne Rosenblum signature Potato Pancakes & More Recipes for Holiday VisitorsOld Fashioned Potato Pancakes RE Potato Pancakes & More Recipes for Holiday VisitorsThis time of year generally brings an end to empty nest syndrome for a lot of us. Those who have flown the nest and headed to college or have married and settled in new locales converge upon “home” for the holidays.

And who doesn’t love having the kids back home? Gathering everyone together for Chanukah, Christmas, or the New Year and cooking their favorite foods is what every empty nester loves most. Well, I certainly do, and I look forward to welcoming my daughter and son-in-law and baby grandson in from out of town, immensely. It’s the time I can dust off my food processor and rolling pin, get out the good china and glassware, set the dining room table and show off my best recipes. Some of my own, some that have been passed down from generation to generation in my family, and the new ones have been gathered over the years since I’ve been here at Mr. Food.

Giving Back with Family Promise

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Carol Ginsburg signature Giving Back with Family PromiseFamily Promise Chili 300x225 Giving Back with Family PromiseAlthough we try to keep an attitude of gratitude going all throughout the year, this time of year really heightens that special feeling. What with Thanksgiving plans in full bloom, we certainly want to keep very much in mind that many families are struggling, these days more than ever.

Our family has been fortunate to get involved with a very special national yet grass roots-driven interfaith organization called Family Promise, whose mission is to help homeless and low-income families achieve sustainable independence.

Family Promise helps families in immediate need of shelter, food, hospitality and support services to enable them to gain housing, employment and, importantly, to create a firm foundation for lasting independence. Family Promise gives its volunteers an opportunity to respond to the moral calling to help society’s most vulnerable: children and their families who have lost their homes.
