Family Values and Amish Living

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Howard Rosenthal signature Family Values and Amish Livingwhoopie pie RE Family Values and Amish LivingArt and I recently had the opportunity to visit Pennsylvania’s Amish Country. Since our schedules were pretty tight, we had a lot to see and do in a very short time.

As you can see from all the video (just click here to get to this week’s TV recipes, where you can view video for each recipe) we shot, we took in a lot. We rolled up our sleeves and helped make jams and jellies, got to can Amish Chow Chow and were even the official taste testers when it came to making sure the whoopie pies were up to our high standards.

That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles

Patty in kitchen OR 300x225 That’s the Way the Cookie CrumblesPatty Rosenthal That’s the Way the Cookie CrumblesIt was just another typical day in the Mr. Food Test Kitchen. Well, now that I’m thinking of it, there are no typical days in our Test Kitchen… icon smile That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles

I wanted to share a little story that happened the other day when I was testing some new desserts for the website and our TV segment. I made a batch of chocolate chip cookie cups that I was going to  fill with various fillings.  The idea was that you could put just about anything in a cookie cup and it would taste good.

Anyway, the timer went off, I grabbed a pot holder and as I was taking the mini cookie cups out of the oven, the pan slipped out of my hand and and fell onto the oven door. Well, so much for that batch! And so I spent the next 20 minutes cleaning up my mess.

Mushroom 9305 300x200 Our Trip to Kennett Square, Mushroom Capital of the World

Art at Kennett Inn with those great dishes...

Howard Rosenthal signature Our Trip to Kennett Square, Mushroom Capital of the WorldIt’s National Mushroom Month, and if you love mushrooms like I do, then I bet you wish you were part of our recent trip to Kennett Square, PA - Mushroom Capital of the World.

What a visit it was… Just pulling into town felt like we were rolling back time. Our first stop was the Kennett Square Inn, a quaint restaurant nestled in downtown Kennett Square. There we tasted the best stuffed mushrooms I ever had. They were brimming with crumbled sausage and topped with a light cream sauce, yum yum yum. Then the chef brought out a  filet of beef smothered, yes I mean really smothered with all sorts of exotic mushrooms that were sautéed. Another home-run in our book.

Special Handmade Gifts

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Gifts from Rachel OR1 Special Handmade GiftsRachel Johnson signature Special Handmade GiftsI like to brag to people that I know the Mr. Food and that’s when they get all excited – they say, “He is so great! I love Mr. Food!” I know Mr. Food, but I also know Art and all of the people working with him – the group that became a part of this summer. I came to know them so well that I could pick up on even their slightest mannerisms and “sayings.”

When I was getting ready to wrap up the end of working there this summer, I thought I would try to give back a little of how much everybody in the office gave me…

A Special Visit from the Ghost Whisperer

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

MrFoodwithMaryAnn OR1 300x225 A Special Visit from the Ghost WhispererIf you’re familiar with the show, “The Ghost Whisperer,” then maybe you’re thinking Jennifer Love Hewitt came to visit our office.

Wrong!

Yes, Jennifer Love Hewitt played her on TV, but it was the real Ghost Whisperer – or the woman whose life the show was based on – who came to visit the Mr. Food offices last week. Her name is Mary Ann Winkowski, and she came to tape some shows with Art (Mr. Food) and to talk to us about her new cookbook. That’s right, the Ghost Whisperer herself wrote a cookbook! Can you guess where the recipes came from?

Tell Us: What Are Your Favorite Recipes?

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

As you know, I’m Mr. Food’s Senior Writer, which means, as part of the production team that brings you the Mr. Food segment every day, I work on planning our topics and writing the scripts that eventually make it on the air for you to enjoy. Now of course this is a group effort and there is no “I” in team…so I’d like some more feedback…not just from my co-workers, but from all of you! Yes you!!

Million Dollar Pound Cake 03 05 10 RE Tell Us: What Are Your Favorite Recipes?

One of my favorite "empty nester" recipes for entertaining: Million Dollar Pound Cake!

I get so many differing opinions about what recipes everyone would like Mr. Food to share each day. And as you know, he’s got loads of recipes and ideas – you’ll see thousands of them right here on MrFood.com. Our Mr. Food Test Kitchen is constantly developing more of them… of course, with Mr. Food himself rolling up his sleeves to join them often; and yes even all of us here suggest some of our own family recipes for you to try.

And being an empty nester, just cooking for myself and my husband each day,  I’m really “in” to the recipes for two or recipes that freeze well in portions so I can cook once and have great meals waiting for me, especially if I’ve worked late on taping day.

Meanwhile…back to all of you. Some days I hear rumors that everyone wants healthy foods because they’re on diets or they are watching cholesterol or fiber or sugar… Then I find out…everyone wants rich-tasting desserts! Other days I hear it’s all about comfort foods…especially Amish recipes and it goes on and on… Of course one thing we all have in common has to be budget-friendly recipes…especially in today’s economy.

Oh boy…it’s not easy trying to please millions of taste buds…but try, we do…we really do. Our goal is to offer up a great variety of recipes so that one day the recipe might fit your needs and the next day it might please someone else. But what I’d really like is to get a great conversation going – on Mr. Food’s Facebook page. “Like” it if you haven’t already done so…and start letting us know loud and clear what you like to eat and hope to see us come up with. You won’t be talking to yourself, we will hear you and you will eventually find out that what you’re looking for might already be online or we will work on it and you’ll find it in one of our new cookbooks or on the air. So talk to me…and to thank you doing that, today I want to tell you about a couple of my favorite Mr. Food recipes.

For all you empty nesters like me, if you have a spouse who loves steak…you have to try our skillet Porterhouse for Two Steak! It’s awesome and so easy! Of course, I do cook and bake for my family and friends when they come for a visit…and for dessert – I can’t miss with our Million Dollar Pound Cake – it is the most fool-proof, easy, tip-the-scale-decadent pound cake ever. If you’re on a diet…forget it. If you’re not, you have to try it!

So now that I told you a little about what I like… please write back and share your comments…here on our blog pages and even better on Facebook, so we can get a dialogue going and find out more about all of you, to make our show and our web site even better for you! We really do appreciate everything all of you have to say and just like Mr. Food says, “Together we’ll share the “OOH IT’S SO GOOD!! ®
