I know it’s December and everyone’s mind is on the holiday season, but birthdays - no matter what time of year - should never go unrecognized! And, there’s also the fact that as we age, we tend to say we’d prefer to skip our birthdays – but deep down, we all like to have a special day.
Believe it or not, until recently, we hardly celebrated birthdays at the Mr. Food office! That’s all changed, thanks to our “Birthday Sombrero”! Everyone’s name went into the sombrero, and as each birthday nears, the person celebrating picks a name out of the hat. Whoever’s name is drawn gets to make a special treat of the birthday person’s choice!
Lucky for me, we started this tradition in October, right before my birthday. (Strictly a coincidence! It wasn’t my idea!) Steve, the person I picked, knows me very well, and knows one of my favorite treats (when I’m indulging) is the Chocolate Chip Cheesecake from the Mr. Food Test Kitchen. It was a super delicious way to enjoy my special day! (Thanks Steve!)
This week was Helayne’s birthday. She picked my name from the sombrero, and requested any kind of cupcake. Hmmm… So many choices! I decided to try a recipe I had never made before, again from the Mr. Food Test Kitchen. The Scotchie Surprise Cupcakes sounded sooo good, and didn’t disappoint! I even think these cupcakes would be great to serve during the holidays. Everyone likes biting into a creamy, butterscotch surprise.
I like this new tradition. Everyone has their special day, and the rest of us get to enjoy a special treat in their honor! What could be better than that?
How do you make birthdays special? If you have a recipe that you like to make for a loved one’s birthday, please share it with us!

The cupcakes were awesome Jodi! You are a terrific baker, thank you for making my birthday special at the office!
