5 Favorite Restaurant Recipes to Make at Home

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

Jaime Gross signature 5 Favorite Restaurant Recipes to Make at HomeFast Chicken Fajitas RE 5 Favorite Restaurant Recipes to Make at HomeI love going out to dinner. Before we had children, my hubby and I would not think twice about driving an hour (each way) to try some new, out-of-the-way restaurant. Now when we go out, we calculate how much it is going to cost us to pay the babysitter, before we even think about dinner. So, spending time driving is just not always worth it. We could take the kids with us, but have you been to a restaurant with a 15-month old? It’s not for the faint of heart.

Thanks to the Mr. Food Test Kitchen, we have plenty of copycat recipes from restaurants that are just as good, if not better than, the real thing. One of my favorite go-to’s is Fast Chicken Fajitas. I just make a package of yellow rice on the side and dinner is served – and we didn’t have to wait for a table.

Jaime Gross signature Traditional Irish Recipes & Fun Video Footage for St. Patricks DayIrish Coffee 3 15 11 RE Traditional Irish Recipes & Fun Video Footage for St. Patricks DayWhen you think of St. Patrick’s Day, what comes to mind? Corned beef and cabbage? Green beer? Wearing green clothes?

I think of all of those things as well, but around here at the Mr. Food office, I am reminded of a trip that Mr. Food  and Howard, his right-hand man, took to Ireland a couple of years ago. They brought back plenty of photos, videos and some amazing recipes from the areas they visited.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I am going to share some of the videos with you that they shot. (Just click the links to see the recipes and corresponding video.) They all have spectacular views of Ireland, along with mouth-watering recipes from the regions. Perhaps they will inspire you to cook something other than the usual this St. Patrick’s Day in your home.

Happy Celebration of Chocolate Month!

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Jaime Gross signature Happy Celebration of Chocolate Month!Death by Chocolate RE Happy Celebration of Chocolate Month! Not that you need an excuse to eat chocolate, but I have something to share with you. February is National Celebration of Chocolate Month, hooray!

Before I go any further, let me just jump right in here and tell you that one of my all-time favorite chocolate recipes is from the Mr. Food Test Kitchen and it is Death by Chocolate. The name alone tells you it is gonna be a-mazing! If you invite me to your house and I need a dessert to knock your socks off, I am bringing this one; I don’t even have to think about it.

If you are thinking about a chocolate dessert for that someone special in your life with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, a better suggestion would be Chocolate Lava Cakes. They are rich and warm and gooey…do I have to go on?

Healthy, Quick Dinner Ideas for Kids

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Jaime Gross signature Healthy, Quick Dinner Ideas for KidsPopcorn Lollipops RE Healthy, Quick Dinner Ideas for KidsSo, here we are, the beginning of a new year and ready to start eating healthier. As a household, we all need to make some changes for the positive.

Hubby and I are on board – no problem. The baby is now a year old and still very happy eating whatever I put in front of her: sweet potatoes, lean proteins, avocado and squash. Then there is our 12-year old…more of a challenge.

We have a rule in our house; the kitchen is not a restaurant and I am not a short-order cook. I will make dinner and you will eat it. We try to involve him in planning the meals for the week and this way he has more of an interest. We can’t have hamburgers, tacos and pizza every night. I figured there have to be lighter, healthier versions of these kid-friendly foods out there.

Traditional Chanukah Recipes

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Jaime Gross signature Traditional Chanukah RecipesHanukkah Butter Cookies RE Traditional Chanukah RecipesNext to Thanksgiving, Chanukah is my second-favorite holiday. It’s a festive holiday that’s all about fun. It’s also a holiday that’s rich with tradition. In a lot of families, you can’t discuss tradition without mentioning food.

When I was a child, every year my mom made potato latkes for Chanukah. Now that I’m a mom, it’s something that’s very important for me to do for my own children. Every year, I break out the potatoes, onions and oil and fry a big platter of potato latkes. I have tried many recipes, but the one I keep coming back to is from the Mr. Food Test Kitchen and it’s the Perfect Potato Pancakes.

Deliciously Easy Short Ribs for Fall

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Jaime Gross signature Deliciously Easy Short Ribs for FallEasy Short Ribs RE Deliciously Easy Short Ribs for FallFall has arrived! Well, sort of…

Living in South Florida definitely has its advantages. When the news is reporting snowstorms around the country and we are heading to the beach, life is good. However, we also miss out on the change of the more mild seasons – especially my favorite one, autumn.

I didn’t always live in the South; I spent my early years living in the Northeast. This time of year we would see leaves changing colors, pull out our sweaters and long pants, and start cooking heartier meals in the oven, rather than on the grill.

Homemade Baby Food, 101

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

baby food 179x300 Homemade Baby Food, 101Jaime Gross signature Homemade Baby Food, 101Hello again! Things as usual have been crazy hectic in our house. Back-to-school, after-school activities, homework, etc. Because of this, I try to keep life as simple as possible.

My younger one turns 8 months this week and along with all of her new milestones, this also means that I have been able to introduce real food to my daughter the past couple of months, not just formula. I went back and forth with a question a lot of moms do, “Purchased or homemade?” I decided to go organic, so that her little smushy body would only be introduced to natural foods, not chemicals. Sweet potatoes, carrots, apples, pears, squash. No peas, please! She did not like them – AT ALL! As a matter of a fact, both times I tried giving them to her I ended up wearing them. Have you ever seen a baby spit pureed peas? Not pretty. It was reminiscent of a scene in the Exorcist.

Thinking it would be easier, I decided to buy organic, jarred baby food. The Mr. Food mentality is all about quick and simple, so why should my baby’s meals be any different? I did this for the first month and then looked at what I was spending on her food and compared it to the price of one sweet potato…
